Throwback Thursday: Vintage Lamp Re-Wiring

photo 1 (44)I still can’t believe I did it. I rewired a lamp. A floor lamp. If I can do it, so can you. It wasn’t as scary as I thought it would 2 (39)We found this vintage lamp at a garage sale. We also scored some retro suitcases and magazine that I have plans for (completed project here). I love the lamp because: it is wood, it has a table, and it has caaauuuute feet. Done. This one is staying with us.

However, it was supposed to take an enormous light bulb. Couldn’t find it at Home Depot. You know, we might have been able to find the light bulb to fit, but I didn’t want to keep doing that forever. So it was time for me to learn how to 3 (34)We bought this re-wiring kit from the Home Depot. One night I finally decided to go for it.

I donned some gloves and basically tore it apart with a pair of needle-nose pliers. photo 4 (32)I then taped the new cord to the old cord and ran it through the lamp so the new cord was in 3 (35)Then I worked on attaching the new light socket– I followed a tutorial online as well as the back of the kit. It’s not as difficult as it seems. And I’m going to be completely honest, I don’t really remember how I did it. For one thing, it was a few months ago. I just followed the tutorial and modified as needed. It took patience and nimble fingers, but it worked.  photo 2 (40) photo 4 (33)But since the lamp was old, some of the pieces would not attach properly, so I bought some industrial glue/epoxy for metal at the HD to affix it.

So now, modern, readily available lightbulbs can be used in it! Holla!

I had considered painting the lamp table, but after I was done, I took another look and realized, man, this thing is gorgeous. The wood is in great condition and the few scratches give it a lovely patina. So I left it.

photo 3 (40)And I added that other mis-matched grey lampshade that was on the spray painted lamps to top it off. photo 2 (46)It’s the perfect addition to our kinda-garage sale chair in the front living room! This chair is incredible. Way overstuffed and soooooo comfy! And an ottoman to boot. It’s 3 (41)So now I can sit in the chair, read, blog, have some amazing light, and a lil’ table to put a drink on. It’s 3 (42)Check it 1 (44)The 4 (39) photo 5 (31)The 2 (45)I love this piece because it is old, solid, beautiful, and unique. This project shows how an old, outdated piece from a garage sale ($5!!) can be used and showcased in your 1 (46)What do you think of the lamp? Have you re-wired before? Up for an adventure? You can do it! Just make sure to unplug it if you have to, you know, adjust the wires after a move. ;)

This lamp is now in our main living room and I. LOVE. IT. My water glass sits on it as I type this!IMG_0365
