Graphite Sofa Table

Remember how I wrote recently that I’m all into the light and airy? That I’m not really crazy about dark colors and don’t like them in my home? Well that may not have been totally true. This sofa table changed it all. IMG_1123 Really this paint color changed it all. I didn’t ever think I would paint a piece black (or almost black). Isn’t the point to brighten the old wood? This is what I thought until I saw Miss Mustard Seed’s work with her Milk Paint in Typewriter. I was sold. Dark paint can look amazing, especially when it shows beautiful wood through distressing. I couldn’t wait to try it so I picked up Annie Sloan’s Chalk Paint in Graphite and found the perfect piece to transform- this sofa table. It was beautiful before but some of the trim work had been knocked off and so was a great candidate for a coat of paint. photo 5 (54) I brushed on one coat of this lovely almost-black and it looked great. But like most colors of ASCP it needed another coat of paint. Also like most colors of ASCP, it didn’t really need a full second coat- just a light one. The lovely ladies at Red Hill Home in Fayetteville where I buy my paint helped me out with this- they encouraged me to try watering down the second coat to make it thinner and go on smoother. Plus- it makes the paint last longer. Sounded like a win for sure. So I tried it out. And loved it. I added about 1 tablespoon of water I would estimate to about 4 ounces of paint. Just enough to make it not as viscous. IMG_0940 It went on like a dream and after it dried I distressed so the beautiful wood shows through. A coat of wax finished it up and I was smitten. IMG_1115 IMG_1117 IMG_1123 IMG_1097 I wish I could keep it, I really do. But it was so lovely that it went to the booth and was there less than a week before it sold! This piece changed my mind about dark paint colors and I can’t wait to use Graphite again! I’ve already got my next piece picked out for it and can’t wait to see how it turns out! What do you think of the almost-black paint? Are you a fan like me or are you more drawn to light colors? Don’t worry, you can be both! Linked up to Thrifty Decor Chick

  1. I’m totally with you on being inspired by Miss Mustard Seed’s typewriter desk….It inspired the desk I’m working on right now. Black can be such a dark, oppressive color but I’m really starting to love it! Your sofa table looks great in the color!!!
